Heritage Wheat Workshop and Field Tour
Sunday, July 11th, 2010 • 10 am - 5 pm
Crabapple Farm, 100 Bryant St., Chesterfield, MA
Hey all you local food enthusiasts! More and more people are getting interested in local production of grain. This is our fourth year growing wheat, and our focus has been on finding varieties well adapted to our soils and climate and on simple, cheap technologies that allow us to harvest it on a small scale. Come learn about what we have found out!
We are going to be holding a Wheat Workshop and Field Tour on Sunday, July 11th. 10am to 5pm: Heritage Wheat Workshop and Field Tour. Small scale organic production methods, types of wheat, historical background, variety selection and availability. We will tour our trial field with over two dozen winter wheat varieties.
Noon to 2pm:
Potluck Picnic Lunch, discussion
2pm to 5pm:
Small Scale Grain Harvesting Methods: Harvest, Threshing, and Cleaning
Weather permitting, we will harvest some of our plots of wheat using scythes and sickles, building shocks of sheaves in the field. I will demonstrate a small homemade electric thresher as well as flails. We will show our cleaning methods and equipment.
